About this coloring page

A friendly long-neck dinosaur sits on a checked picnic blanket in a sunny meadow. In front of it are a wicker basket, a stack of sandwiches, a slice of watermelon, a round fruit and a jug of juice with cups. Behind it stand two leafy trees, puffy clouds and a big sun. The lines are medium thickness with plenty of open space, so it suits children from about five on their own, and younger ones with a grown-up helping on the small food items. It is a lovely page for talking about picnics and healthy food, and about what plant-eating dinosaurs like this one really ate: leaves, ferns and other plants, not sandwiches.

Skills it practices

  • Staying inside the lines
  • Choosing colors that go together
  • Patience and focus

Activity ideas

  • Count the food on the blanket and name each item out loud.
  • Draw your own favorite picnic food in the empty space next to the dinosaur.
  • Ask: what would a real long-neck dinosaur eat at a picnic? (Leaves and ferns!)

Learn while you color

  • Tyrannosaurus rex was about 12 meters (40 feet) long, roughly the length of a school bus.
  • Birds are living dinosaurs: they descend from small feathered meat-eating dinosaurs.
  • Many dinosaurs had feathers, including relatives of Velociraptor, which was only about the size of a turkey.

Coloring tips for this page

  • Color the large areas first, then the small details with colored pencils.
  • For a realistic look, use greens and browns like modern reptiles and add a lighter belly.
  • Color the background last: a blue sky, an orange volcano glow or green jungle makes the dinosaur stand out.
  • Use two shades of the same color on the body, the darker one along the back and the lighter one underneath.
