D makes the sound at the start of dog, duck, door and drum. The tip of the tongue taps just behind the top teeth and the voice is on, so the sound is short and firm. Ask a child to say "dog" and then "top"; the D and T are made in the same spot, but D buzzes and T does not. Capital D begins with a tall line down, then one large curve from the top of the line out to the right and back to the bottom, like half a circle. Lowercase d is written the other way around: draw the small circle first, then a tall line on its right side that reaches up higher than the circle. Because d starts with the circle, it helps children tell it apart from b.
