About this coloring page

Psalm 23:1 opens one of the best-known psalms, traditionally linked to David, who worked as a shepherd before he became king. In the King James Version it reads "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want". This Bible verse coloring page sets those words in bubble letters with the reference underneath, inside a rounded frame with a flower in each corner.

A shepherd leads, feeds and protects the sheep, and the verse uses that picture to describe God caring for a person. "I shall not want" is older English for "I will not lack what I need." The rest of the psalm continues the picture with green pastures, still waters and a table prepared. Families often choose this verse as a first memory verse because it is short and easy to picture. It suits Sunday school, a bedroom wall, or a card of comfort.

Ideas while you color

  • Draw sheep in the spaces around the frame.
  • Read the whole of Psalm 23 together and list the pictures it uses.
  • Say the verse from memory after coloring each word.
